"After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him. . . into every town and place. . ." (Luke 10:1).
What is The 72—Partners on the Road? Born of a pioneering effort 1996, the ministry (formerly known as Harvesters for Christ) has served more than 100 congregations in diverse cultures in almost all the districts of the LCMS across the United States. Congregations partner with a The 72 ministry team to accomplish specific evangelism goals that the congregation has identified. Congregations then commit themselves to be in Bible study with the team, to support them in prayer both publically and privately, and to support their work in both word and deed while the team is on-site serving them.
Host congregations also designate people to receive appropriate training and to follow through on the process they have begun together after the team has departed. While the team members receive no salary for their services, the congregation agrees to provide necessary logistical support, including needed supplies, travel, food, and lodging or utility hook-ups for recreational vehicles.
The 72 team members are trained evangelism volunteers available to congregations to serve on location to assist them to either begin, revitalize, or expand their outreach ministry to help them to reach the lost--a mission we share with Jesus, who came to seek and save people who are lost (Luke 19:10). The teams are available to serve for three or four weeks. Occassionally, teams will provide leadership at weekend events only.
- The kinds of evangelism activities with which The 72 teams can assist congregations to reach people for Christ and His Church are:
- helping evangelism committees/boards set goals;
- organizing publicity and promoting public relations within the community;
- leading SHARE LIFE/WITNESS WORKSHOPS to help members express their faith and hope;
- equiping members to make in-depth visits with people who are prospects for the church;
- planning "side-door" evangelism events;
- organizing a Telecare ministry;
- teaching Bible classes on evangelism and witnessing;
- establishing an assimilation strategy;
- processing a plan for ministry to inactives;
- developing a small-group ministry framework;
- discovering the unique aspects of the mission field in the community;
- supporting and affirming what is already being done well;
- helping with a new mission start; and
- helping with VBS and Friendship Sunday planning.
